Senate on Friday, 26 June, 2020 adopted a report by a special committee formed to investigate Kirinyanga Governor Anne Waiguru’s impeachment.
The 11-member committee, chaired by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, found the gross violation of the constitution and abuse of office charges against Waiguru unsubstantiated.
“The committee having investigated the matter in accordance with its mandate reports to the Senate that it finds the two charges against the governor have not bee substantiated,” the report concluded.
The team was praised for its good work by senators allied to president Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
On the other hand, those who are close to Deputy President William Ruto dismissed it saying the decision to save Waiguru had been made even before the committee sat.
“Not news at all. That matter was settled before the committee was established,” said Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.
Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika said the committee sanitised Anne Waiguru just as she had expected.
Nandi Senator Simon Cherargei on his part termed the report as a love poem to Waiguru. He told other governors facing impeachment to simply shout BBI and their sins would be forgiven.
After her victory in the Senate, Governor Anne Waiguru issued a statement saying that her troubles are because of her political stand.
“As I said before, my woes are solely because of my stand for BBI and support for the Handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Former Prime Minister Hon. Raila Odinga. I will not stop my support or change my commitment to what will be for the betterment of our children, for women and the country as a whole,” Waiguru said
