Nelson Havi Wins LSK Presidency

Lawyer Nelson Havi has beat stiff competition to emerge the Law Society of Kenya’s President. The new president will serve a three-year term from 2020 to 2022.

The race attracted four candidates – two men and two women. For the position of president, the candidates were Nelson Havi, Harriette Chiggai, Maria Mbeneka, and Charles Kanjama.

The candidates, other than throwing around the word “transformation”, have little in common and represent four very different “visions” for LSK.

Outgoing president Allen Gichuhi came into office in 2017 with promises of turning LSK into a transformative and visionary body.

Havi had already raised concerns about the credibility of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, which carries out the LSK elections, claiming that they are already compromised and they were planning to rig him out.

The NASA-allied lawyer has been in the limelight for his support towards Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s Presidency.

“LSK Needs A Brave, Fearless Chairman,” asserted Havi during the delivery of his speech in 2017’s year’s LSK end year party.

He is known for his wit and boldness in stating what he believes is right that has often landed him in trouble with his peers at the bar, especially Senior Counsel  Ahmednasir Abdullahi.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna is among those who were first to congratulate Havi.

“Congratulations Nelson Havi. I wish you all the best leading us at the Law Society Kenya. Congratulations too to all the other candidates who won and all those who ran”, said Sifuna.
