Crucial Things Sakaja Requested Before Sonko Gave Up Nairobi

In the runup to the unprecedented take-over of Nairobi County leadership by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja made a raft of demands.

With the County mired in deep crisis after a Nairobi Court ordered the Governor out of his City Hall office, Sakaja revealed he was consulted before the surrender.

Among his demands were that Nairobians do not get subjected to a fresh vote to elect a new Governor should they go the impeachment route.

Instead, the first-time Senator stated that crucial services and the County’s stability be considered before any far-reaching changes are made.

Also, Sakaja documented that the changes be undertaken with the full knowledge and respect of the sanctity of Nairobi voters who voted in Governor Sonko in 2017.

The other demand by Sakaja was that all the current staff at Nairobi County Government be assured of their jobs and security in the new arrangement.

Sonko gave up the County after he was incapacitated from discharging his duties by a litany of court cases.

Equally, the Assembly was also planning his impeachment after crucial services like development, revenue collection, waste management and road construction services ground to a halt.

The National Government invoked Article 187 of the Constitution to effect the take-over of crucial services from the County.

These services are health, transport, public works, development and ancillary services.
