Last words have always been a subject of interest.

This is because we all need something sentimental to hold close to when we lose our loved ones, others want powerful advice while some others want to learn a truth a dying person may have kept well hidden.

However, most of the time, last words are often ordinary comments like Steve Jobs’ last words which were ‘Oh Wow. Oh Wow. Oh Wow.’

Sarafina Demathew recently opened up on her late husband John Demathew’s last words in a phone call 4 minutes before his untimely death.

“He had called me while he was in Thika and asked me to open the gate for him as we live about 5 minutes from town. He had a habit of calling and asking that when he was near the house so that you prepare yourself. However, on the day of his death, he hadn’t arrived by the estimated time and I felt that something was wrong and his phone went mteja,” she revealed on Radio Jambo.

In a state of panic, Sarafina called his phone 8 times to no avail and that is when she called Demathew’s brother to find out if he had gone to the house in the village.

“I thought maybe he has gone to his other house in gichagi. I called his phone 8 times then called his brother to check whether he was at the house in the village,” she revealed.

However, Demathew had not gone to the village as his car had rammed into a lorry along Thika Super Highway near the Blue Post Hotel.

“He died four minutes after calling me. He died close to our home. That thing rattled me,” Sarafina disclosed.
