I Was Offered Money to Fix a Match, Tusker Keeper Admits

Rwandese coach, Emery  Mvuyekere has revealed that he was approached by an unnamed football analyst over the possibility of fixing a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match.

The custodian’s revelations come at a time when Kenyan league has been rocked by claims of match-fixing that recently saw four players handed lifetime bans by world football governing body FIFA over their involvement in the vice.

The Tusker number 1 says he was approached last year and advised to concede a goal in the last minute against Chemelil Sugar. He would, in turn, get Ksh. 200,000 from the fixer.

“Here is your small part, let in a goal in the last minute of the match and we shall pay you handsomely,” read the text message from the match manipulator.

The player revealed that the fixer wanted to get insights into the game before tabling his offer for the keeper who is rated among the best in the county.

“It’s one of those weird numbers, I can’t tell from where, but the instructions were very explicit and especially if there were certain benchmarks by your team on how many goals they were targeting to score in a particular match,” he told PD in an interview.

When he turned the fixer down, he went on insult the Rwandese insult terming him foolish for turning down a ‘life-changing’ opportunity.  He, however, says he does not regret turning down the overtures.

“What next? Yes, I have taken the easy money, and then what happens to professionalism? Personally, I cannot live with that guilt,” he added.

The match-fixing vice has rocked the Kenyan Premier League with frequent allegations that matches are being manipulated. Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula has been in the forefront calling for investigations into a number of teams that he says are engaging in the criminal act.
