The government has revealed plans to offer free soda and bread to the first 30,000 mourners to arrive at Kabarak for the burial ceremony of the late former president Daniel Moi.

Rift Valley regional commissioner George Natembeya, while speaking to the media on Monday, February 10, stated that mourners would also get free transport from Nakuru and Maralal towns.

“Snacks, soda and a bottle of water will be provided for the first 30,000 people who will arrive in Kabarak. They will also be provided with seats,” Natembeya stated.

“We have planned all school buses in the area to ferry people from Nakuru town and other areas. The governors will also provide other alternative ways of transporting people to Kabarak.”

Natembeya, who reassured the public of enough security at the ceremony, urged Kenyans to show up in numbers to pay their last respects to the country’s second president.

According to reports, Moi’s body will be flown directly to the Kabarak University grounds on Wednesday morning for a requiem service before it is interred at his home, a stone’s throw away.

In the capital, organisers are making final touches to Nyayo Stadium which will host Moi’s memorial service on Tuesday, an event that will be graced by more than 10 Heads of State.

On Sunday, President Uhuru Kenyatta inspected the stadium, an indication that he had taken personal charge of preparations for his political father.

The committee organising the funeral said it still is compiling the list of those who will attend but by Sunday, 10 presidents, including Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Salva Kiir (South Sudan) had confirmed they will attend the event.

Others expected to grace the occasion are Former Tanzanian presidents Benjamin Mkapa and Jakaya Kikwete.

After lying-in-state for three days, on Tuesday morning, the State funeral procession will make its way from Parliament Buildings to the Nyayo Stadium for the inter-denominational service led by the Africa Inland Church (AIC).

The former Head of State will be accorded a State funeral with full civilian and military honours as per the law.
