Breaking: AFC Leopards Stars Joins Zambian Giants

AFC Leopards has been dealt a major blow in their title push following the departure of lead striker John Makwatta who has decamped to Zambian giants, Zesco United.

The Kenyan international is currently the leading scorer in the Kenyan Premier League with 13 goals for Ingwe. He was on course of bagging his second golden-boot but has decided to end his association with Leopards by signing for the Zambian side.

A source from the den has told Opera News that the forward, who joined the club at the start of the season has been allowed to leave after all the three parties reached an agreement that will see the striker link up with three other Kenyans at the Ndola based side.

“It is true Makwatta has left for Zesco United. He reached an agreement with the club and he has been allowed to leave with our blessings. He did a good job during his time here and we can only wish him the best at Zesco,” the source speaking on condition of anonymity told Opera News.

His departure is said to have been down to the team’s financial struggles. Leopards have not paid their players for a couple of months and already a number of them have walked out. They include Whyvonne Isuza, Dennis Sikhayi, Soter Kayumba, Vincent Habamahoro, Ismaila Diarra and Tresor Ndikumana.

Makwatta becomes the second Kenyan player to join Zesco this week. Ex AFC Leopards keeper Ian Otieno ditched Red Arrows for the Ndola based outfit earlier this week. Other Kenyan players at United are Jesse Were and David Owino. Anthony Akumu recently left the club for Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa.
