Mentally Ill Man Hacks Sleeping Brother to Death

Police in Trans Mara East, Narok County are holding a 50-year-old mentally ill man who allegedly hacked to death his younger brother after a domestic quarrel.

Confirming the incident, the area Police Commander David Mwangi said that the deceased, Richard Chepkwony, was sleeping when the accused, Philip Chepkwony, attacked him using an axe.

“We received the report past midnight and rushed to the home only to find a lifeless body lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom,” said the police boss.

He added that the suspect had visited his younger brother and all seemed well as the two took dinner together.

However, a quarrel ensued between the two at bedtime when the elder brother picked an axe and hacked his sibling on the neck killing him on the spot.

According to his relatives the suspect has been suffering mental illness for a long time.

The suspect is being held at Emurua Dikirr police station as investigations into the incident continue.

The body of the deceased has since been taken to Longisa District Hospital mortuary in the neighbouring Bomet County awaiting post mortem examination.

Mwangi said the man will be arraigned in court tomorrow where he will be charged with murder but will depend on the court’s directive on the suspect’s mental illness.

“We shall arraign him tomorrow to face murder charges. It will be upon the court to order mental assessment for further legal action to be taken,” the police boss observed.

The police boss has further warned area residents against taking the law into their own hands whenever they have differences but instead embrace dialogue in resolving issues in a bid to avert loss of life.
