Boxing Day has always caused a lot of confusion among Kenyans. Many Kenyans associate the holiday with the sport of boxing which isn’t the case.

Boxing day is an international holiday that is usually celebrated a day after Christmas Day on 26th December. It is celebrated annually globally.

The origins of boxing day are believed to be from the time of slavery. All the slaves aka workers were expected to work for their colonial masters on Christmas day. They, however, got an off on the 26th of December. Their masters would wrap them gifts in boxes such as money and leftover Christmas dinner. They would partake in opening the boxes on 26th with their families.

It is also believed to have started in the 1800s when the rich would gift the poor.

However, in modern-day society, boxing day is the day when people open the Christmas gifts laying under the Christmas tree.
