Embattled Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been impeached by the county MCAs.

The governor, who is facing graft cases was impeached after all the 63 MCAs present voted in support of the motion that was tabled by Ndenderu MCA Solomon Kinuthia.

Mr Kinuthia said there has been a lack of accountability in the management of county resources by incurring unsustainable debts and other pending obligations to the tune of Sh4 billion.

“These pending obligations were never disclosed in the County Fiscal Strategy Paper, 2019, thus violating Articles 201 (e) of the Constitution and Section 107 (2) (e) of the Public Finance Management Act,” he stated in the motion seeking Mr Waititu’s impeachment.

This, he said, placed Kiambu in a highly precarious financial position as it may lead to protracted and costly court battles with creditors and eventual auctioning of county assets.

Among other reasons that led to Waituitu’s impeachment included gross misconduct and abuse of office, conflict of interest in using proxy companies to trade with the county and failure to comply with procurement regulations.

The ward representatives also accused the governor of holding Kiambu county captive as he tries to clear himself of corruption cases he is currently facing in court.

According to Lari Kirenga MCA Joseph Karichu, the impeachment was effected since the deputy governor James Nyoro cannot perform some county duties which he stated the law does not give him executive powers reserved for a substantive governor.

“Kiambu does not belong to Waititu or Nyoro or any other elected leader. It belongs to the people of Kiambu. We feel bad when we cannot get some needs because he is out of office” he said.
