If Anything Happens to Me in Kenya, Call These Numbers – Miguna Miguna

Just hours after announcing his anticipated return to Kenya in January 2020, embattled city lawyer, Miguna Miguna, has laid bare emergency numbers to be called in case anything happens to him during his journey back.

Taking to his social media accounts on Monday morning, Miguna, who has been out of the country since he was deported to Canada in 2018, gave out contacts belonging to Law Society of Ontario, Khaminwa & Khaminwa Advocates, as well as those of his law firm, Kazembe & Associates PC.

On Sunday, the vocal lawyer took to his Twitter account to announce that he will be landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi on January 11, 2020.

At the same time, Miguna urged Chief Justice David Maraga, Law Society of Kenya, his lawyers as well as human rights bodies to ensure that a court order issued in 2018 to facilitate his return to Kenya and have his passport returned to him, is complied with.

“My Flight to my Mother Land will land at the JKIA on January 11, 2020. To CJ @dkmaraga @Kenyajudiciary, my lawyers, KNCHR and @lawsocietykenya: Court Orders must be OBEYED. Ensure COMPLIANCE with Justice Mwita’s ORDERS of December 14, 2018,” read his tweet.

Miguna was first deported out of the country in February 2018 after an arrest over his role in the mock swearing-in of Raila Odinga as the people’s president on January 30, 2018.

The immigration department later claimed that Miguna was in Kenya illegally as he had renounced his Kenyan citizenship when acquiring a Canadian passport.

The following month, Miguna attempted to return to Kenya through JKIA but his attempts proved futile. He was forcefully deported back later after spending several hours at the airport’s detention facility.

However, in December 2018, the High Court ruled that Miguna is a Kenyan by birth and holding a Canadian passport does not deny him his birthright.

In his ruling, Justice Chacha Mwita declared that the State violated his rights by deporting him and awarded Miguna Ksh7.2 million in compensation.

Despite this, the Kenyan authorities have remained adamant over the ruling, forcing Miguna to extend his stay in exile.

Since his deportation, the lawyer has been so vocal against President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government as well as Raila Odinga whom he usually refers to them as #Despots.
