Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential ambition on Wednesday received a major boost after former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama endorsed his bid.
The ex-Senator declared his support for Ruto’s presidency saying that he is the best suited to lead the country in 2022.
His move comes in a wake of a purported political alliance in the making, bringing together Deputy President William Ruto and powerful Ukambani leaders.
The move is a change of tune considering that he is on record opposing President Uhuru Kenyatta’s previous decision to endorse DP Ruto in 2022.
With his formidable political network in Ukambani and financial heavyweight, Muthama is a major boost to DP’s camp.
Muthama, who also announced his political comeback in the next general election, is also opposed to any politically sanctioned constitutional referendum through BBI.
Muthama, who refused to defend his Machakos senatorial seat after a disagreement with his Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, is said to be eyeing the county’s governor seat.
Although he remains mum on his 2022 intentions and seat of choice, everything points towards that direction.
Renovating his Machakos residences to turn it into a centre for political operations and getting his degree is a clear indication that he is going for the County boss seat.

“I am a leader who does not need an office to lead. I have my residence and that is where I will bring together the region’s political leadership,” he said in a recent interview with The Sunday Standard.
He once described Kalonzo as a man who does not know the value of money and weak in decision-making.
He is also on record saying that the Ukambani region has the numbers and can negotiate for a bigger position at the national political level.
