Nyanza Regional Commissioner (RC) James Kianda has warned teenage girls’ predators of dire consequences in a bid to reduce the alarming rate of teen pregnancies which consequently lead to school dropout.
Mr Kianda who presided over the commissioning of a three-day free medical camp in Nyamira on Monday noted that Nyamira was leading in the whole country in cases of teenage pregnancies where candidates were mostly affected.
“Let us take care of the girl child, and be concerned when we get a big number of these school girls getting pregnant while still schooling, a show that somebody somewhere has abdicated his responsibility and needs to be reminded,” he said.
In the just-concluded KCSE, over 50 students were reported pregnant while two delivered while undertaking their examination in Nyamira County.
He ordered the Chiefs to ensure that the men responsible for pregnancies were identified and arraigned before court and charged for defilement so as to “end this irresponsible behaviour of sexually assaulting our daughters”.
Mr Kianda further warned perpetrators of illegal Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) on young innocent girls cautioning that they risked being arrested.
He noted that FGM is rampant in Gusii land during this long holiday and termed it as an archaic ritual secretly practised and affirmed. He, however, said they would not relent sensitizing citizens to abandon it.
“I want the in-charge of security to ensure there are zero cases of FGM in their areas of jurisdiction and no negotiations on those arrested for their discipline will be a lesson to those who are still physically abusing innocent girls by interfering with their private body parts,” the officer stated.
The three-day free medical camp was organized by Inka medical association (IMA) members, an association of medical doctors from Gusiiland drawn from across the country, Abagusii professionals and The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
