Why BBI Will Just Be a Waste of Time

The country holds its breath as the much anticipated BBI report is set to nestle in the hands of President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday.

The document, for the past month, created tension as politicians shared divided opinions over what the paperwork would entail for the country.

Despite the excitement of the release of the report, a section of politicians attributed that it was not a solution to the chaos being witnessed within political parties.

Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu, during an interview on NTV’s AM Live show, remarked that the initiative would not help end the wrangles witnessed within Jubilee Party and NASA coalition.

Simiyu pointed out that the differing comments being made by leaders across the country were contradictory to the purpose of the initiative by the two big wigs.

“What is going on within Jubilee and within NASA are divisions and I don’t know if the BBI is going to be useful. When you find one wing throwing abuse at the other wing(s) what cohesion are we talking about,” remarked the Member of Parliament.

He added, “We are in an unfortunate position where the BBI was supposed to bring unity and cohesion in the country; I’m afraid it appears to be causing division. The division is even coming before we have read it.”

Aside from the problems facing the ruling party and the ‘buried’ NASA, individuals have been signalled out as the ones who will be most affected by components of the handshake project.

Economist David Ndii noted that the BBI might shift the power balance in the country.

Ndi stated that Raila would be left severely wounded and embarrassed if the initiative was not adopted.

The former NASA strategist further claimed that the same verdict would face Deputy President William Ruto if the joint task force project is accepted.

He proclaimed that the current situation showed that Ruto is set to fail unless the DP changes tactics.

One of the key things that have been a topic of debate is the need for a referendum if suggested by the paperwork.

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi echoed the sentiment by Ndii asserting that the ODM leader would fail majorly on the referendum bid being pushed for.

Ngunyi stated that the move was Raila’s way to remain relevant in the political field as his career comes to a close.

The popular analyst hinted that the ‘Tinga’ man would go down with initiative in the event it flopped.

“What if the referendum fails? Because from where I sit, it will flatly flop. It will go down with him,” declared Ndii.

Popular lawyer Donald Kipkorir on Monday added a new twist to the already unfolding saga.

According to Kipkorir, he will not read the report that will be made public on Wednesday at the Bomas of Kenya.

The flamboyant legal representative commented that the reason behind his decision was that he had already endorsed it before even knowing the contents.

The city lawyer, however, urged those opposed to it to first read it then bring arguments with clear and justifiable reasons.

Kipkorir’s counterpart, lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi, a month ago questioned the remarks made by the chairman of the team Yusuf Haji.

Haji uttered that they hoped the report would help Uhuru and Raila achieve their agenda.

The statement by the Garissa Senator did not go well down with Ahmednasir who felt the report will just benefit the two leaders instead of the country.

“So it’s just about Uhuru and Raila moulding Kenya to “their vision”?…How insulting and patronising can the political elites/class be?” read tweet by the lawyer.

With the sentiments given, the big question remains if this brainchild of the handshake is a waste of time and whether it’s set to bring more problems than the prophesied solutions.
