BBI Report D-Day: What You Need to Know Ahead of Report Hand Over

On March 9, 2018, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nasa leader Raila Odinga pulled a shocker.

At the moment when the nation was staring at its lowest moments, with the country’s political class locking horns over controversial Presidential elections and subsequent pockets of violence witnessed in some regions, the two leaders unexpectedly buried the hatchet.

The March 9, 2018 Handshake deal between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nasa leader Raila Odinga.

Congratulations messages streamed in from across the political divide and the country seemingly got united towards a common course.

Finally, Kenyans were able to walk and mingle freely with their security assured courtesy of the Handshake deal between the two leaders.

Then came the Building Bridges Initiative(BBI), a task force that was birthed after the Handshake deal.

The BBI team, comprising of a 14-members, included Chairman Senator Yusuf Haji, Adams Oloo , Agnes Kavindu, Senator Amos Wako, Florence Omose, Saeed Mwanguni, James Matundura,Major John Seii, Bishop Lawi Imathiu, Maison Leshomo, Senator Mohamed Yusuf Haji, Morompi ole Ronkai Prof., Bishop Peter Njenga, Rose Moseu and Archbishop Zecheus Okot.

After nearly 20 months of seeking Kenyans opinions on better ways of fostering a national accord, the team will on Tuesday hand over its report to President Uhuru and ODM Leader Raila, at Statehouse, Nairobi.

Various leaders including political, religious, multi-sectoral among others are expected to attend.

President Uhuru and Raila, who have been the face of the initiative, will lead the country in receiving the report.

DP Ruto who in all appearances has been the doubting Thomas on the consequences of the BBI course is also expected to attend.

Speaker of National Assembly Justin Muturi and his Senate counterpart Ken Lusaka will also be present.

Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, despite being a critic of the course, and his Minority Leader James Orengo will also be present.

National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale and Minority Leader John Mbadi, who confirmed his attendance on Monday, will also be present.

Council of Governors Chair Wycliffe Oparanya will lead a host of governorsĀ in witnessing the historic moment.

Cabinet Secretaries and some MPs will no doubt be present.

Also, various religious leaders have been invited. Ambassadors will presumably be part of the group.

Another meeting has already been scheduled on Wednesday at the Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi.

100 people from every county will have an opportunity to represent their region in launching the course.

The aftermath of receiving the report is expected to shape political conversations across the country given that a section of the political class had begun opposing the report while others declared their support without having read it.

MPs allied to Ruto have castigated the course several times labelling the course as an initiative meant to disadvantage the DP and enable Raila to ascend to power.

On the other hand, those allied to Uhuru-Raila pact have been rooting for the deal saying it is a sure course of enhancing unity.

Though Raila and President Uhuru have before assured Kenyans that the course is noble and not about succession politics, Tuesday event is no doubt the moment of truth for the country.
