Sacked Wazito Coach Almost Fired 26 Players Before Meeting His Axe

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) newbies Wazito FC, on Thursday, fired American tactician Melis Medo after only four league matches in charge.

According to the club’s official statement, Medo was in mutual agreement to exit due to poor performance.

“We can confirm that coach Melis Medo has left the club. Medo joined the team in October and was in charge of the team for four league matches. Upon discussion we have mutually agreed to end our association,” the club statement read.

Chief Executive Officer Dennis Gicheru thanked him and wished him well in his future endeavors. “I take this moment to thank coach Medo for his service to the club and wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” he said.

But Opera News has established that Medo had lost control of the club’s dressing room and had earmarked almost every player for the sack. He had prepared a list of 26 players to be presented to the club’s boss Ricardo Badoer for firing.

The players included former Gor Mahia defenders Abouba Sibomana and Karim Nzigiyimana.

Wazito FC have moved with speed to appoint former AFC Leopards coach Stewart Hall and veteran tactician Frank Ouna to serve as head coach and assistant respectively.

“The two are good coaches. Hall is experienced and has been very successful in clubs that he has coached. Ouna understands our traditions and I believe the two will work well together,” CEO Dennis Gicheru said of the appointments.

“They have joined us on a consultancy basis until the end of the first leg and they will play a crucial role in helping us set up our technical bench and also have a competitive playing unit in place, we will give them all the necessary support,” he added.
