Arsenal Coach Slammed For Letting Players Choose Captain

Veteran English coach, Harry Redknapp has slammed Arsenal coach Unai Emery for letting players select their captain, this comes in the wake of a storm that saw Granit Xhaka stripped of the captaincy a few weeks after he was named a captain.

The Swiss midfielder was voted in as new captain after Laurent Koscielny quit the club for a return to France last summer. A month later however he was demoted and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang named skipper of the team.

Trouble started when the left-footed midfield enforcer was booed by club supporters as he went off during a match against Crystal Palace at the Emirates a match Arsenal threw away a two-goal lead to settle for a two-all draw.

The midfielder responded to the jeers by using the F word against the fans something that didn’t go down well with the fans and the club hierarchy. The player has never featured for the club ever since despite issuing a public apology and has since lost the leadership position at the club.

Aubameyang was named the captain of the team after his teammates voted him in something, Redknapp, a former Tottenham, West Ham, Queens Park Rangers, and Southampton manager says shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

“Isn’t it a poor group of players, you look at that team, it’s so poor. There’s a lack of heart. The manager keeps coming out, asking the players who should be the captain. You’re the manager. You pick the captain, you go, ‘I like you, you’re going to be my man, any problems and they can go to you’, you don’t let the players pick. What is this a popularity contest?” he stated.

The Gunners will be at home against Southampton at the Emirates on Saturday.
