University Student Raped and Killed in Her House

As gender-based violence continues to escalate in the country, yet another woman has been murdered under unclear circumstances, this time around, in Kasarani, Nairobi.

The fourth-year Kisii University student was ambushed in her bedsitter apartment at Sunton area by an assailant who raped her, before strangling her to death.

It is her boyfriend, one Benson Chacha, who discovered her dead body when he arrived at the house for a visit.

Kuingia nikampata amelala across the bed half-naked (Upon entering the house, I saw her lying across the bed half-naked),” the grieving Chacha said.

The chaotic state of her house indicated signs of a heavy struggle between Leah Momanyi and her attacker, raising eyebrows as to why no one went to her rescue when, as neighbours said, she screamed for help.

According to the building’s night guard, he heard screams within the apartment, but was unable to ascertain where exactly the distress call was coming from.

It is after almost four hours that officers from the Sunton Police Post arrived at the scene, but for Leah, it was too late.

In a confusing turn of events, the assessment report by the police indicated that Leah’s death was as a result of suicide.

Her autopsy report, however, indicates that she died of strangulation and impact from being hit with a blunt object on the head.

Leah’s family has called upon the DCI to take over the probe from Kasarani police who, they say, have messed up the investigations.
