Spanish Shocker! Coach Moreno Set to be Fired After Qualifying For Euros

In a shocking twist of events, Spain is set to rehire Luis Enrique as head coach and part ways with Robert Moreno despite the later guiding them to next summer’s Euros.

Moreno, who was Enrique’s assistant was elevated to head coach when the former Barcelona man stepped down from his position to attend to her then-ailing daughter Xana who later succumbed to cancer.

Spain thumped Romania 5-0 on Monday evening in their final Euro 2020 qualification match. It also served as Moreno’s final match in charge of the 2010 World Cup winners. The tactician also missed the post-match press conference as the Spanish FA feared that he could announce his departure before they make it official on Tuesday morning.

Moreno was in charge of Spain for nine games winning seven and drawing the other two matches. The team scored 29 goals in the process and let in just four goals.

Enrique and Moreno have worked together for many years. Moreno served as Enrique’s assistant as AS Roma, Celta Vigo, Barcelona, and the Spain national team. The tactician had hinted that he would be willing to step down should Enrique decide to return as head coach and he has stuck to his word.

His departure, however, has come as a shock to Spain players who were happy working under the 42-year old former defender but it is thought that the FA decided to make the changes early enough so as to avoid a repetition of what transpired in 2018 just before the world cup when coach Julen Lopetegui was fired on the eve of the tournament after Real Madrid confirmed that he would be taking over as Real Madrid coach after the tournament.
