Joseph Okumu Shines as Defensive Error Denies Kenya Famous Win

Harambee Stars drew 1-1 with Egypt in their first 2021 African Cup Of Nations qualifier match. Stars had to come from behind with Micheal Olunga netting the all-important equalizer.

Ian Otieno was only introduced into the match due to the first choice goalkeeper Patrick Matasi sustaining an injury early on. The second choice custodian put in a brace that had many calling for him to start against Togo on Monday.

Should Matasi be fit for the Togo match, he could find himself on the bench.

Joseph Okumu is a gem

The young center back was one of the standout players for Kenya at the Africa Cup of Nations in June. Against Egypt, he was composed under pressure and was the leader of the backline.

At 22 years of age, Okumu still has a lot to learn but the early signs are positive.

Victor Wanyama still has a lot to offer

The skipper had come under criticism from fans over a few average performances for the national team. Against Egypt however, Wanyama was at his absolute best and did his job in a very tidy manner.

The Lion of Muthurwa once again proved that he still has lots to offer in the National team.

Defensive errors our worst enemy

At AFCON, Kenya conceded two penalties and six goals in total as they were knocked out of the tournament at the first hurdle. Against Mozambique in a friendly match, Joseph Okumu made an error that resulted in a goal for Mozambique as Kenya lost 1-0.

Against Egypt, it was Lawrence Juma’s backpass that led to Egypt netting the opening goal. Harambee Stars will need to cut out the defensive errors as they are disrupting the growth of the team.
