Kenya Pipeline Warns Against Contaminated Tap Water

Kenya Pipeline Corporation has sent a disturbing memo to members of its staff after scores residing in its staff quarters were hospitalised.

In the memo sent by a KPC official only known as KW Ruto, residents based at the Embakasi staff headquarters were advised to stay away from tap water as it emerged it was contaminated with raw sewage.

Ruto also stated in the memo that the Corporation had got in touch with city clinics who have handled sick staff and that Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company was equally looking into the matter.

The memo demanded that the KPC staff stop using tap water forthwith and that employees with symptoms such as diarrhoea seek medical assistance.

In the memo, Ruto assured residents the corporation would avail water using bowsers.

Nairobi Public Health officials confirmed the incident noting that sewerage water had seeped into a reservoir that serves Kenya Pipeline Corporation.

The contamination, they said, had left several residents admitted with symptoms of diarrhoea.

However, they could not give the exact number of residents affected as it emerged they were treated at different health facilities.

Health officials have since taken samples of the contaminated water to laboratories to establish the level of contamination.

Meanwhile, Public Health officials plan to drain the reservoir and clean it before it gets cleared for safety.
