Egyptian Minister Comes to The Aid of Harambee Stars

Egypt Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy came to the aid of the Kenya national team who risked being kicked out of the hotel in Cairo on Wednesday evening owing to unpaid hotel bills.

The national team is in Cairo for a 2021 African Cup of Nations match against Egypt that will be played on Thursday evening in Alexandria. On Wednesday, the team risked being kicked out of the hotel after the government failed to pay hotel bills.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa took to social media to slam sports cabinet secretary Kirimi Kaberia for frustrating the national team.

“I said here that the holder of the PS office is not willing to support football and most sports in general. He has money and has decided its better the boys are thrown out of the hotel for us to know who is the boss. It’s not right and we shall continue to call this behavior out, “ he said.

Kaberia, on the other hand, insisted that the federation had refused to disclose information on where the team is residing so that payments can be made.

“We have asked them (FKF) to either provide account details for the hotel they are in, but they insist we send them the money in cash. They have refused to provide the details and so we’ve asked them to find a way out and then we shall reimburse them when they present the receipts,” said Kaberia.

By Wednesday night no truce had been reached and Egpyt sports ministry had to step in to save the situation as disclosed by Mwendwa.

“The stars will have accommodation for tonight courtesy of the Egyptian minister for sports Dr. Ashraf Sobhy who has intervened until after the game tomorrow. We, however, have to pay by that time. Whew,” Mwendwa tweeted.
