Two-storey Building Collapses, Woman Trapped Under Rubble

Operations are underway in Kitere, Rongo Sub-county, Migori County, to rescue a woman trapped under the rubble of a collapsed two-storey building.

The structure, adjacent to Dora Hostel, caved in Tuesday morning, the Kenya Red Cross said.

Photos from the scene indicate that the ill-fated house was still under construction.

This brings to three the number of collapsed buildings around the country in 2019 alone, with the Precious Talents School tragedy being the most deadly.

Eight pupils died when a classroom block caved in at the school, which has since been shut down, while students were attending their morning preps in September.

Dozens other sustained serious injuries, with some still hospitalised.

In Kakamega, one person died after a building came down on construction workers in October, the survivors being trapped under the rubble for several hours before rescue.

The rise of such tragedies has cast the spotlight upon contractors and government authorities, who have been accused of laxity and corruption in regulating the Civil Engineering industry.

Following the Precious Talents accident, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha led an onslaught against poorly built schools around the country, cracking the whip on low standard establishments, such as Pama Academy in Kangemi and Greenfields Academy in Changamwe.

“Our agencies are taking urgent actions to contain the situation and alleviate further suffering,” President Uhuru Kenyatta said after the Sep. 23 incident.
