The business of conmanship has no respect for human dignity or property. Calling these individuals conmen is just a fancy way of calling them smart thieves.

They might not break into banks or households and perform armed robbery but their theft hurts much more. This is because they have mastered the art of playing with your feelings and emotions. They make you give them your money willingly without hesitation and make you feel like a fool.

Conmen work overtime to come up with new unscrupulous ways to get your hard-earned money without getting caught.

While they have abandoned many methods that have since been put on blast, here are the new ways they have adapted that you need to be on the lookout for.

House hunting

Househunting in Nairobi and its environs has become a risky business as this is where conmen milk money from unsuspecting Kenyans. With the rise of the internet, people have turned to online methods of house hunting and with this wave, conmen have followed suit.

Today, the conmen post a dreamy house with a low rent since they know this will attract house hunters. They then ask for the rent when called, claiming that they are not on-site and the house is on-demand and could be taken by other prospects. Once you send both rent and the deposit, they are never to be heard from again.

Fake Mzungu online

With the rise in social media and sponsor lifestyles, many conmen have formed fake Facebook and Instagram accounts as white men. They then lure unsuspecting Kenyan women claiming they love them and want to send gifts from abroad. When they send you the latest iPhone and some money, the goods always get stuck at the airport and a fake KRA agent calls asking for an absurd amount of clearance fees.

Whatever you do, don’t send this money. Your money and the goods will all disappear.

Fake NGO jobs

Everyone dreams of working at an NGO because of the perks and high salary. Unfortunately, conmen know this and send fake job training emails to unsuspecting Kenyans asking for a training fee beforehand. This is the first sign that you should abort the mission as NGO’s don’t ask for any money.

‘Nitumie kwa hii number’ Fraudsters

Almost every Kenyan has received the ‘nitumie kwa hii number’ message. They hope to confuse people who were about to send money to someone they know to send to them instead. Beware!

Reverse Mpesa

Conmen have also adapted the habit of sending fake ‘MPESA received’ messages to people then calling to ask for the money back. You have to be very careful as the MPESA messages can seem real. Always make sure that the message is authentic as only MPESA sends authentic messages. If the message is from an individual’s number, ignore them completely. It’s a scam.

Asking for your phone to make an important call

If this isn’t the oldest trick in the book, I don’t know what is. They approach people who look vulnerable and susceptible to their lies. They themselves adopt a very helpless tone when they approach you asking to borrow your phone to make an urgent call. Most seem stranded.

Best believe that once you give your phone away is the last you’ll see it. Chasing them down never worked for anyone. In fact, it might be more dangerous for you as they work in groups and are dangerous.

Posing as school teachers

Many pose as your child’s school teacher. They pretend to be sending an important message from your child requiring more money at boarding school. To escape this tactic as a parent, always save your child’s teachers numbers.
