While Kenya is home to tens of political parties, few actually make the cut in terms of considerable popularity or even social media followership.
The few of the political parties worth mentioning have stood the test of time and popularity to make it in this list as of October 31, 2019.
5. ANC Party
Coming at position 5, Amani National Congress Party was formed back in 2015 by former Vice President Musalia Mudavadi after quitting United Democratic Front (UDF) a party from which he vied for Presidency in 2013.
ANC would coalesce under the NASA coalition in the 2017 General election to front ODM Party’s Raila Odinga as its flag-bearer. The coalition lost to Jubilee Party.
On Twitter, ANC has a following of some 13,400 users while it enjoys a paltry 6,000 Facebook followers.
4. KANU Party
As the oldest Party in Kenya, KANU ruled the country for close to 40 years before it lost elections in December 2002.
KANU is the only political party to have been used by two Presidents in the history of Kenya.
Its dominance was cut short by NARC’s former President Mwai Kibaki who trounced KANU’s Uhuru Kenyatta by a 62 per cent victory over KANU’s 31 per cent.
While the Party’s current Chairman is Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, President Uhuru Kenyatta held the position from 2005-2012, when he abandoned the Party to form The National Alliance (TNA) from which he successfully ran for Presidency in 2013.
KANU enjoys a 22,700 followers on Twitter and even more on Facebook with 27,000 followers.
3. Wiper Democratic Movement Party (WDM)
Formed in 2005 after winning the referendum vote under ODM, Wiper renamed after Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka unsuccessfully ran for President in the disputed 2007 General elections.
Wiper would join forces with ODM Party in the subsequent General elections both in 2013 and 2017 where their preferred flag-bearer Raila Odinga lost to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Wiper Party boasts a following of 30,300 on Twitter and a paltry 6,000 on Facebook.
2. Jubilee Party
Jubilee Party was formed in September 2016 after 11 political parties merged to drum up support for President Kenyatta in the runup to the 2017 General elections.
The party would win a majority of the seats in Parliament and also secure President Kenyatta a comfortable win for his final term as President.
On Twitter, Jubilee has a following of 225,300 while having 389,000 followers on Facebook.
1. ODM Party
Being one of the most popular parties in the land, ODM was formed with the intention of rallying support for a constitutional change in 2005.
Among those in the Movement at the time were President Kenyatta’s KANU brigade and Kalonzo Musyoka’s WDM.
The two would, however, part ways in the runup to the disputed and re-emerge as Deputy Prime Minister and Vice President respectively.
While Jubilee Party is technically the largest party going by the numbers in Parliament and the Senate, ODM is one of the major political parties in Kenya.
In the last General election, Jubilee Party garnered a total of 171 seats against ODM’s 76 in Parliament while having a lead at the Senate with 34 seats against ODM’s 20.
This was, however, after Jubilee Party was bolstered by 11 smaller parties joining it in the runup to 2017 elections.
ODM enjoys a following of 335,700 on Twitter with another 16,800 followers on Facebook.
