The Current State of Kenyan Football in a Nutshell

Kenyan football is in a sad state at the moment. For Starters, the national team Harambee Stars has won none of their last five matches, losing four and drawing the other, a run that started back in June at the Africa Cup Of Nations in Egypt.

The team has played their last two matches at home, one being a 1-1 draw with Uganda while the other was a disappointing 1-0 loss to Mozambique at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani. Next up is an AFCON 2021 qualifier clash against Egypt in Cairo.

Meanwhile, the Women National team Harambee Starlets’ hope of qualifying for the 2020 Olympics is in serious doubts after the team’s preparation was halted abruptly for lack of funds.

The Kenyan women national team has been in camp ahead of their crucial two-legged fixtures against Zambia slated for November, but Football Kenya Federation (FKF) have, on Tuesday, disbanded the camp indefinitely.

While making the announcement, FKF President Nick Mwendwa attributed the unfortunate decision to the government’s failure to finance the team.

Interestingly and agonizingly at the same time, Starlets were in the last stage of the qualifiers with the aggregate winner earning direct qualification to next year’s Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

In the Kenyan Premier League, clubs are running broke following the withdrawal of sponsorships by giant betting firm Sportpesa after a tax row with the government. Sony and Chemelil Sugar have already handed out walkovers having failed to gather enough funds to honor matches.

Sony has already done it twice this season and one more will see them relegated.

On the continental front, the countrys two representatives in the CAF Confederations Cup, Gor Mahia and Bandari both posted disappointing results in the first leg of their qualifier ties. Gor Mahia drew 1-1 with Motema Pembe while Bandari was thrashed 4-2 by Horoya FC in Guinea.

To wrap this article up, FIFA has threatened Kenya with a ban after what it termed as external interference on the operations of the Football Kenya Federation.

Not looking good at all!
