West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo’s exemplary efforts were on Tuesday recognised at the United States of America, (USA) with an award; Saving Mothers Service Award
The humorous governor was feted for extraordinary service, leadership and devotion to women’s health and for improving the access to health services to the people of West Pokot by a non-profit making organization based in New York in the USA.
According to the organisation, the county of West Pokot has made huge strides in strengthening maternal health outcomes.
While rewarding the governor, the organisation acknowledged that since 2016, they have been visiting West Pokot but it was the 2019 visit that impressed them through the progress in the county including cleanliness, modernisation and establishment of reproductive theatre specifically for women.
The ceremony which also marked the organisation’s 10th anniversary was held at the 3 West Club in New York City.
Saving Mothers organisation focuses on eradicating preventable maternal deaths and birth-related complications in low-resource settings worldwide.
The US-based organisation has partnered with West Pokot County to ensure no woman dies while giving life.
During the 10 year saving mothers anniversary, money was raised to purchase solar panels for various health centres in the county and to sponsor more specialised doctors to West Pokot in 2020
Money was also raised to purchase modern portable equipment and machines to support expectant mothers in the county.
