Lonyangapuo, Magoha Lock Horns Over School Closure (Video)

West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo and Education CS George Magoha

West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo has lashed out at Education CS, George Magoha, following the order for closure of some schools across the country.

Lonyangapuo, asserted that he would not take the matter lying easily due to the implications it would have in the long run.

In a video seen by this reporter, the governor argues that the order by the CS was inconsiderate towards the efforts made to restore peace in his region.

The county boss reiterated that the shutting down of Korokor school, which is located at the border of West Pokot and Turkana, was a big mistake.

Unafungaje na hujui Korokor iko kwa border ya Westpokot na Turkana. Amani imekuja juzi na watoto wamepatikana alafu wewe kwa kiburi yako na ujinga unakuja kufunga (How do you shutdown Korkor School that is situated on the border of WestPokot and Turkana. Peace was restored a few days ago and pupils got the chance to go back to school but instead, because of your pride and stupidity, you close it,” remarked the governor.

The angry Lonyangapuo went on and declared that schools in the county would not be closed.

The tough-talking politician exclaimed that it was absurd giving instructions that children could not study in mud thatched buildings.

He went on to suggest that Magoha should close down the Ministry of Education for failing to provide schools with enough teachers.

Kwanini musifunge Wizara ya Elimu na TSC kwa sababu  inakosa kutupea waalimu?(Why don’t you shutdown the Ministry of Education and TSC for failure of not providing schools with teachers?” questioned Lonyangapuo.

Last month, the no-nonsense Magoha ordered the closure of all schools with unsafe structures after the Precious Talents School tragedy that claimed the lives of eight pupils.

The Education head revoked the licence of the school, together with that of St Catherine Bombolulu Primary School in Kibra and Pama Academy in Kangemi, that were identified to have weak structures.

Close to 800 children from the school struck by the disaster were transferred to neighbouring institutions in a bid to ensure their learning activities were not interfered with.

Magoha intensified the crackdown on similar schools and during a visit to Mombasa County, ordered the immediate closure of another learning institution, Greenfield Academy.

“I visited the school and it was no different to the one that collapsed in Dagoretti,” stated Magoha.
