Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the billionaire owner of British petrochemical firm Ineos has spoken about the sinking Manchester United.

According to Lequipe, a French media newspaper, the British’s richest man says, by thinking that money can buy anyone for better performance, Man United lack intelligence. And that good performance requires, among other things, great understanding of players and their strengths.

“Sport is not just about signing cheques, as Manchester United realizes. You can buy what you want and get a disaster. Succeeding in football is much more complex than people can believe. Here, we have a really thoughtful challenge. And if we do it well, it may take a few years, but we can have the Champions League regularly in Nice,” the OGC Nice owner said.

He went ahead to insinuate that Nice could stand a chance of easily winning Champions League ahead of Man United.

“No, the dream is to beat Manchester… Oh I’d love that. (Laughs.) Playing the Champions League would be great for Nice and we can do it intelligently. It’s not about throwing money out the window. Buying €100m players, it is not very satisfactory,” the America’s Cup Challenge sponsor said.

Just recently, his firm Ineos came to the limelight for successfully realizing a dream with Kenyan marathoner Eliud Kipchoge. Kipchoge completed 42km in 1:59:40 to become the first man ever run a marathon race under two hours.
