Students of Egerton University Njoro campus are currently in panic after one of their female colleagues was brutally raped by a fellow student on Tuesday evening.

The incident is said to have happened around 9pm at the popular Tatton hostel within the campus.

According to one of the students, the attacker allegedly threatened to stab the female student with a knife if she dared report the matter.

“University security team has launched a manhunt for the male student,” a student was quoted by Nation.

The student is reportedly seeking refuge at the university’s security offices

“The female student is traumatised and is currently seeking refuge at the university main campus security offices,” another student added.

According to Nation, the suspect and his roommates went into hiding after the heinous act.

Male students have expressed their frustrations over security personnel alleged harassment as investigations continue.

“The campus security is keeping every male student at the campus like a suspect,” an agitated male student stated

However, other reports indicate that the suspect was arrested by his colleagues and handed over to the university security team despite the police insisting no such incident had been reported to them.

“The Officer Commanding Njoro Police Station has not received such information,” said Njoro Sub-County Police Commander Mohammed Huka.

There has been an increase in the number of murder cases targeting students within and outside the institution.

This year, a student was found murdered in his rental house opposite the university gate while another stabbed his girlfriend to death before he attempted to commit suicide.

In 2017, another female student was murdered at the same university by a man who worked in a nearby butchery.
