Cabinet for Sports Amina Mohamed has come out to explain that her ministry will not fund any sports club in the country.

Many Kenyan sports clubs in all genres are experiencing serious financial problems and cannot operate any more. A case in point is Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards who solely depended on SportPesa and are now left stranded.

But in an interview, the CS insisted that the National Sports Fund kitty-which would have been the hope of some clubs, will not release a penny to any club.

She says only national teams are eligible to get a share of the billions. That clubs should always look for alternative sources of running their day-to-day activities.

“Regulations insist that we’re only going to fund national teams. Because all of you know that we have many clubs in this country and even if we were given 100 per cent of the money (Sports Fund money), we wouldn’t be able to fund all clubs in the country. No country in the world funds clubs. So we only fund national teams,” she said.

With this statement, it will be fascinating to see how struggling clubs, especially football clubs, will get up on their feet for proper premier league competition.

The National Sports Fund is a State Corporation established by Sports Act No. 25 of 2013 part III section 12 under the Ministry of Sports, Culture and The Arts. The Fund is mandated to raise funds through sports lottery, investments and any other means and disburse the funds for the development of sports and recreation.
