Key Reason Behind County Assemblies Chaos

MCAs fleeing after chaos erupt at the Nairobi County Assembly

Recent chaos by MCAs has left a bad image of the leaders to the public who are fed up with the rising violence witnessed from time to time.

The key reason behind the madness and the drama was hinted to a negative drive by the ward representatives.

VIO (Volunteers Involving Network) Chairman Meshack Odede during an interview on NTV’s morning show AM Live, claimed that the chaos that have been experienced in the County Assemblies was due to selfish reasons from the leaders.

Odede remarked that the interest of the people being represented by the politicians was never a priority to them thus are not ashamed when engaging in the petty fights.

“I want to address our MCAs across the country; MCAs in almost every county are always causing chaos but it is never about the people but for their own selfish needs.” expressed Odede.

Embattled Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi during a past interview

The remarks by the head of the organisation, comes a few days after scenes rocked the Nairobi County Assembly following the reinstatement of Beatrice Elachi as the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly.

On Wednesday, MCAs in the assembly were forced to flee after tear gas was used to disperse them from the premises.

According to Elachi, the violence witnessed was due to Majority Leader Abdi Guyo who had stormed her office.

The tough talking Speaker alleged that Guyo together with some group of unruly ward representatives had wanted to beat her up.

She further remarked that a meeting had been orchestrated by the majority leader to have her evicted from the building at a designated time.

“If I die today, my family must hold Guyo responsible.” declared Elachi.

Following the drama, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko fired Guyo and named a replacement for the position.

Sonko who wrote a letter to Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju, stated that the decision to have the embattled leader removed was due to Guyo undermining his government through interference and intimidation.

“Consequently, am forwarding to you the name of Mark Ndung’u as the new majority leader designate.”

“Kindly effect appropriately.” read a part of the letter.

Governor Sonko and Guyo had locked horns after the Majority leader had ridicule the county boss over taking over the roles of the County Public Service Board.

Guyo reiterated that Sonko had the powers to hire and fire county executives and chief officers  and the civil servants hired by the board.

“The governor has no power to suspend or sack civil servants. That is the work of the board which is an independent body.”

“We want to know where he is getting the powers to send home civil servants.” proclaimed Guyo.
