Former Gor Mahia Defender Retires from International Football

Former Gor Mahia defender Godfrey Walusimbi has announced his retirement from international football.

The Ugandan player featured for the Kenyan Premier League giants between 2013 and 2018 alongside international duties. During this period, he shone both for his club and his national team Uganda Cranes.

But, siting need to give younger players opportunities to showcase their talents, the skilful defender has written to Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) to officially call it quits from international scenes.  Scenes he starred in especially in 2017 and 2019 when he represented the country at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament.

“It has been 10 years down the road having the great honour and privilege to represent my country, Uganda in international football. Together with the support of my teammates, management, fans and government at large. I believe I have done my best-concerning representation with full ability, so to that, I decided to let the younger ones showcase their abilities too, and we hope they too will embody the spirit of the nation,” the letter read.

“I wish the national team [Uganda Cranes] the best of luck in their future endeavours and now the focus will be on my current club. I would like to thank you [Fufa], the government and my family members,” it added.

FUFA have also expressed great gratitude to the left-back with intriguing flashbacks of how Walusimbi aka ‘Jajja Walu’ was instrumental for Uganda Cranes for about a decade.

“FUFA shall forever remember the fond and great memories especially when you ruled the left-back role of Uganda for a decade ably controlling the world’s finest players as Muhammed Salah and the like. FUFA is proud of your services and commitment to this great Nation Uganda whenever you played and we wish you fruitful deliberations in future,” FUFA wrote.

Apart from Gor Mahia, Walusimbi has played for, among others, Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa and CS Don Bosco of DR Congo.
