Starehe Girls Centre Closed Indefinitely Following Mysterious Disease Outbreak

Starehe Girls Centre in Nairobi has been closed indefinitely after an unknown disease broke out.

The decision to close down the institution was reached after 52 girls in the had been isolated over sneezing and high pitched cough.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the school stated that cases of unknown diseases presenting symptoms of high pitched cough, sneezing and low-grade fever were on the increase.

School director, Sister Jane Soita, said the school is working closely with the Ministry of Health, Department of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Response and the Nairobi sub-county department to contain the situation.

Samples have been taken for further tests to determine the condition.

According to the school, parents and guardians of the affected students have been informed of the misfortunes affecting their children.

“The school is in constant communication with them, We are working to monitor and stabilize the situation,” said the school administration.

“We are holding a meeting with the Ministry of Health and we are handling the situation,” stated Starehe’s director, Sister Jane Soita.

A starehe girls student who spoke to Opera News on condition of anonymity disclosed that the number of students affected by the disease is more than 52.

“The number of affected students is not 52. By the time we were being sent home close to 100 victims had been isolated in the old dorms,” she said. the isolated victims were more than eighty,” she said

“I asked the nurse what the disease was and she said it might be a Rhinovirus infection,” she continued
