Government Swings Into Action After 13 Are Killed in Mandera

Five people have been arrested in connection with the Banisa killings where over 10 people were shot dead by suspected clan militias on Tuesday morning.

The militias believed to be from the Degodia clan descended on a family living in a remote village in Banisa sub-county killing 10 of them.

The killings happened in Dumaal Village Malkamari Ward in Banisa sub-county in Mandera where five females, a minor and four men were shot dead.

Mandera County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha said the government was in control and had restored normalcy in the area.

He said the government had arrested perpetrators and killers of the innocent villagers and was rounding up more suspects. The Commissioner added that those found culpable by area detectives will be arraigned in court.

“We are following up chiefs in Dumaal and if found to be complacent will also be arraigned in court, government officers found to have contributed to the killings will also bear their own burden,” said Kyatha.

Users of social media platforms, who have been posting hate messages, have not been spared with Mr. Kyatha warning the government will take stern action on them.

He thanked local leaders and residents for cooperating with security agents to restore peace in the region.

The government has beefed up security in the area with intensified patrols in a bid to disarm locals holding firearms illegally.
