3 Drown in Separate Incidences at the Coast

A Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student drowned when swimming at the Sawasawa Beach in Mswambeni, KwalE on Sunday.

Eugene Kepkemboi Kibet, aged 20, had gone swimming together with his two classmates, who reported that he was overwhelmed by strong ocean currents which drowned him.

His body was retrieved from the water and was taken to the Kwale Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

In a similar incident, a 21-year-old man drowned while swimming together with his girlfriend at Lake Chala in Rakeke Village, Taita Taveta County Sunday evening.

Divers attempted to recover Benjamin Marunde’s body to no avail.

Elsewhere, a 16-year-old boy drowned Sunday evening while swimming at Taqwa ruins village in Lamu.

Police officers and those from Kenya Maritime Authority visited the scene and tried to recover Ismael Odo’s body, but the activity was called off due to unfavourable weather conditions.

In Kijipiwa, Kilifi, two robbers dressed in police uniform accosted and robbed a trader outside his shop at Majajani trading centre.

According to the victim, Hamadi Badi Chai, the two were in possession of unidentified weapons and had threatened to shoot him before breaking into his shop and stealing Ksh 5,000.

Members of the public responded after his wife raised an alarm, but the alleged robbers managed to escape in a private car.

Investigations into the incident have been launched.
