1 Prisoner Killed, Several Injured In Embu Accident

A Tuesday morning accident has claimed the life of one prisoner after a vehicle he was in, was involved in a road accident near Thuci River on the way to Meru.

Eight other prisoners and seven prison wardens were seriously hurt in the early morning accident.

The Embu Prison Vehicle, involved in the accident, was ferrying inmates to Meru.

Sources allege that the car rolled several times before coming to a stop near Thuci River.

About four months ago four people were killed in a grisly road accident in Meru County after a head-on collison involving a lorry and a matatu.

Confirming the accident, Meru County Police commander David Kirui, said, “the lorry was heading to Meru while the matatu was heading to Nairobi.”

Kirui stated that the cause of the accident was not established immediately but an investigation was underway.

The latest data from the department of traffic four months ago, showed that over 1,200 people had died from road accidents in the country since the year began.

The data showed that the number of those killed had slightly declined and stood at 1,279 against 1,293 in the same period last year.

Mary Omari, the Traffic Department’s Commissioner in charge of operations noted that motorcycle operators and pedestrians accounted for the highest numbers.
