Mathare United head coach Salim Ali has explained why his side failed to beat Kariobangi Sharks on Saturday, September 28.

The two clubs were meeting in a Slum Derby at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos and every side was out to collect the three points-a dream which never materialized as the match ended in a barren draw.

But speaking afterwards, coach Salim Ali now says his game-plan did not work after forward Klinsman Omulanga was introduced for injured Chris Ochieng in the 20th minute.

“The game plan was to have Ochieng run them rugged with his physicality for about an hour and then have Omulanga come in and do the same for the final minutes but it did not go quite to plan. But I am happy with what I saw from Omulanga”, Salim said, as is quoted by the club’s official website.

“He did not have a proper pre-season with us but has improved tremendously to get to the level of the other players. He had chances where he could have scored and I am happy that he got himself in those positions, it shows that he is heading in the right direction,” he added.

However, Salim admits that a draw was a fair result from the match and that their focus is now turned to their next league fixture.

“Games against Sharks are always going to be tough, it’s a derby that always brings out the best from both teams. I’m disappointed that we didn’t win because we had planned for a whole week to win but I can say the draw is a fair result. We take the point and focus on our next assignment,” he said.
