The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party has suffered a major blow in its bid to recapture the Ganda Ward seat after its key member shifted his allegiance to a rival camp.

Erastus Katana, a former ODM councillor in the defunct Malindi Municipal Council, has pledged to support Abdulrahman Omar Mohamed, an independent candidate, incoming by-election.

The former Orange member was received by Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa at her Kakuyuni residence on Sunday.

The MP has been campaigning for Mohamed despite being an ODM member.

Jumwa is reported to have sworn that the by-election is going to serve as a lesson to the Orange Party for attempting to oust her from parliament on grounds that she is supporting DP Ruto’s presidential ambitions.

Jumwa, who has declared interests for gubernatorial seat,  claimed that Kilifi County was no longer an ODM zone and that the by-election will prove her assertions right.

The defiant ODM member asked the ward residents to abandon ODM and vote for Mohamed adding that he had proved his worthiness before the nullification of his victory.

Mohamed, who was declared the winner in 2017 elections, decamped from ODM after losing his seat through a successful court petition.

He is set to face off with ODM’s candidate Reuben Katana in a by-election slated for October 17.

Other candidates include Jubilee Party’s Joseph Kiponda and Kadu Asili’s David Mitsanze.
