The Kenyan champions will be looking to overturn a 4-1 deficit when they face USM Alger in Nairobi. Should they pull what has been dubbed ‘mission impossible’ they will qualify for Caf Champions’ League Group stage for the first time ever, failure will see them drop to the Caf Confederation Cup group stage.

The match came at a time the team is in a financial crisis. The club is without a sponsor following Sportpesa’s decision to pull out and have not paid the player’s August salaries. There was a looming strike before last weekend’s league match against KCB but the players agreed to honor the match and went ahead to win 2-1.

Ahead of the match against the North Africans, Mapigano said the players are fully focused on putting in a good performance and hopefully overturn the results. He added that they will not be thinking about the team’s sorry financial state heading into the game.

“We have to give our best because a Caf Champions League match is not only important to the team but also to players as individuals because big clubs watch it and a good performance could earn you a move. We know the team is facing financial challenges but as players, we will put the finances issues behind us and focus on the game on Sunday, we want to give out best and hopefully win and qualify for the next round,” he said.

The match is expected to kick off at 4 PM EAT.
