Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has, on Saturday, September 28, come out to declare the club’s debts for players and members of the technical bench.
He was speaking at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani where the club was unveiling alcohol company Keroche Breweries Limited as their partner for Sunday’s Caf Champions League match against Algerian side USM Alger.
“The club owes two months and three months’ salaries to the players and technical bench respectively. There are no monthly grants from KPL,” as is quoted by the club’s official website.
While indicating hopes for a possible long-term engagement with Keroche, Rachier called upon more sponsors to come to the rescue of the Kenyan Premier League giants following the exit of betting firm Sportpesa which had been sponsoring the team since 2016.
“Keroche has come to partner with Gor Mahia FC ahead of tomorrow’s match. It will hopefully result in a long term partnership. We are appealing for more sponsors. There is room for at least five (5) sponsors,” he said.
Rachier’s statement comes a few days after the financial situation almost got out of hands when the club almost failed to honour their first-leg meeting with USM Alger. It took the intervention of the government and a fruitless fundraiser to see K’Ogalo in Algeria where they received a 4-1 beating. They are hopeful of winning the Sunday match by at least 3-0 in order to advance to the tournament’s next stage.
