President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Friday contributed Ksh3 million to the parents of victims of the Precious Talents Academy Monday tragedy that left 8 pupils dead.

Raila, who spoke at a requiem mass ceremony for the victims at Ngong Race Course, on Friday, said President Uhuru sent him with a donation of Ksh1 million for the affected parents and another Ksh1 million to go towards the construction of the school.

Additionally, Raila said Uhuru had sent him with the message that the government would construct a public school at Lenana High School and a temporary structure at the school at Ngando Ward, so that children can continue with their education uninterrupted.

Raila warned greedy investors against constructing death traps for learners. He also asked safety inspectors to do their work well by refusing to approve substandard buildings.

On Thursday, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said the government had shut down Precious Talents Academy over the safety of the pupils.

He also added that the school did not have qualified teaching staff and sanitation facilities.

The CS noted that more than the 923 pupils who had been enrolled at the school would be transferred to neighbouring schools.

The owner of the school, Moses Wainaina, was also later arrested on Thursday and was to be arraigned in court on Friday.
