KPL Week 3: Sharks Wither as Leopards Get Off The Mark

The Kenya Premier League match 3 fixtures were played over the weekend. Kakamega Homeboyz is the new table topper following a comfortable 3-0 win over Kariobangi Sraks while Chemelil is rooted at the bottom of the table without a single point.

Below we look at the 4 main talking points from the weekend’s action in the Kenyan top-flight football league.

Kariobangi Sharks wither

William Muluhya’s Kariobangi Sharks made history a little over two months ago when they became the first Kenyan team to beat an English Premier League side after a penalty shoot-out win over Everton at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.

Much was expected following that historic win but so far, Sharks are yet to click in the league. Two draws and a 3-0 thrashing by Kakamega Homeboyz have Sharks in the relegation playoff zone on the table. Improvements are badly needed.

AFC Leopards finally off the mark

A second-half penalty from John Makwatta was enough to hand AFC Leopards victory against Wazito FC and most importantly, a crucial 3 points for Cassa Mbungo’s side.

Having failed to win in their first two matches, the pressure was mounting on Leopards to deliver especially after the backing the team received in the transfer market. With bottom-placed Chemelil up next on the fixture list, Leopards could find themselves propelling further up the table in the next few weeks.

Bandari’s fine form continues

Last season’s runners up Bandari United made it 3 wins in a week with an edgy 1-0 win over Kisumu All-Stars on Sunday. The run started with a 2-0 victory over Ben Guerdane before a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Zoo Kericho in the league on Wednesday.

Bernard Mwalala’s side is now second on the table but level on 7 points with leaders Kakamega Homeboyz. If last season was Bandari making clear of their title intentions, this season has them actually playing like they could be the new Champions!

Worrying signs for Kisumu All-Stars

Newly promoted side Kisumu All-Stars could be in for a rough ride if the early signs are anything to go by. From the first 3 matches, Henry Omino’s side is yet to score a goal while conceding 4 in the process.

Something has to change or All-Stars will be back in the National Super League sooner than they expected or even hoped for.
