2 Govt officials Arrested Over Relief Food Theft

Two government officials were on Tuesday arrested in Kitui County over relief food incident.

It was reported that a District Officer (DO) identified as Njuki and the Chief for Kyalele Location Mwema Kalungu were apprehended after it was claimed that they stole relief food meant for distribution.

The two were alleged to have stolen 7 bags of maize, 2 bags of rice and 5 bags of beans all weighing 90kgs, that had been transported by the government to assist floods victims in parts of  Kitui East constituency.

Further information pointed out that the stolen food was discovered at Njuku’s house after area residents stormed into his premises.

Nzambani OCS Cheroiyot revealed that investigations into the matter had begun.

“We are launching our investigations and stern action will be taken against the DO and the chief if found guilty.

“We want to know how the relief food was diverted from Government to a private store,” remarked Cheroiyot

On Saturday, A Garissa County official was charged with stealing food for aid worth Ksh192,000.

The official who was identified as Looro Achumi was taken to court alongside Ibrahim Ali Hilow for stealing 400 50kg bags of maize.

Court documents stated that Achumi had signed documents that indicated that the cargo from the inland depot had been distributed to the affected families in Hulugho where in contrast, it had remained in the Garissa Township.

The consignment was nabbed while being repacked into GOK labelled bags.
