Kericho Teachers Advised to Make Good Use of Digital Laptops

Kericho County Commissioner, Moses Mbaruku, has challenged teachers in the county to utilize the digital learning devices (DLPs) given to schools by the government, to enhance learning on information technology by the young learners.

Mbaruku observed that most of the laptops given to the 504 schools in the county had been kept away in stores by the teachers.

He challenged the teachers to get the gadgets out of the stores so that the young learners can start gaining knowledge on information technology by actually using them.

The county commissioner, who was chairing the Kericho County Development Implementation Coordination (CDICC) Committee meeting in his office, Wednesday, was informed that a total of 504 primary schools in the county had received the DLPs gadgets.

The meeting heard that the main challenge facing the DLP usage was that of older teachers in the schools, who were shying away from learning how to integrate their teaching aids, using the laptops given to the schools.

Kericho County Director of Education, Zachary Mutwiri, stated that transfers and promotion of teachers had impacted negatively on the use of DLPs and that there was a need to train younger and more teachers on how to use the gadgets.

Mutwiri told the meeting that there were a shortage of over 1800 teachers in primary schools in the county and another 500 teachers in the secondary schools.

The director added that there was need to promote more teacher so that schools who have headteachers in acting capacities can move into the positions.

Meanwhile, the meeting was told that a total of 93 kilometres of tarmac road had been done and completed within Kericho by the national government since 2014.

Eng Thomas Ogogo Ogogo said that some of the completed roads included the 36 kilometre Taita-Liloch – Mutarakwa, Sigowet- Chepkemel- Kapsorok 30km, Anaimoi- Kapsoit (15km), Brooke- Kipchimchim – Kaptebeswet (12km), Premier- Kabianga (15km) among others.
