Police in Kisumu were on Wednesday morning forced to disperse Kisumu County Speaker, Onyango Oloo, together with his rowdy supporters after the team attempted to storm the assembly.

The embattled speaker, who was accompanied by the youth, had stormed the building accusing the county MCAs of wrongful impeachment.

Oloo attempted to access the assembly premises but was repulsed by anti-riot officers, who had already arrived at the scene to contain the situation.

Oloo last week on Thursday, laid out plans to return to the chambers and chair the afternoon session. This was after a group of MCAs allied to him dismissed a vote by the assembly to elect an acting speaker to replace him while he battles corruption charges.

According to them, the election of an acting speaker was not discussed in the House Business Committee as scheduled in the Standing Orders.

However, the MCAs who elected Elisha Oraro as temporary speaker asserted that the election was conducted in accordance with the law.

One of Oraro’s supporters, who is also the Majority Leader Kenneth Onyango, opined the decision to oust Oloo and install Oraro was grounded in law.

Oraro was elected the acting Kisumu speaker until corruption charges against embattled incumbent Onyango Oloo are cleared.

The embattled speaker is accused of receiving Ksh17 million bribe to authorise irregularities in the building of the Lake Basin Mall.

This, according to the Director of Public Prosecutions, allegedly led to the inflation of the cost from Ksh2.1 billion to Ksh4.1 billion.
