Exact Value of Money Stolen in Moyale Heist Revealed

Police on Tuesday revealed the exact amount of money stolen during the Equity Bank Moyale heist last week.

Sources indicated that the authorities gave Ksh47 million as the exact figure that criminals made away with in contrast to the Ksh 42 million that had been reported by the media.

Information provided by the law enforcers revealed that investigations into the incident would stretch into the country of Ethiopia.

Three people had been apprehended a week ago in connection to the saga.

Reports showed the three suspects were the pilot, his co-pilot and a security officer from the Wells Fargo Security Company.

Marsabit County Police Commander Ambrose Steve Oloo, who confirmed the incident, explained that an aeroplane from Nairobi landed at the Oddha airstrip at 4 pm with three people aboard; Alex Kirate (pilot), John Onunga (co-pilot) and Nelson Lang’at (Security officer Wells Fargo Security Company), carrying an unknown amount of money from the Equity Bank headquarters, Nairobi.

Oloo further pointed out that after landing, the pilot opened the door of the aircraft and alighted to go and check the remaining fuel in the aircraft.

In the process, three strangers appeared where one was armed with a pistol and ordered the three to lie down forcing the pilot to open the door, where they took two sacks of cash and sped away in a motorbike, which had been parked near the airstrip.

Another similar incident occurred on September 5 where thieves posing as police officers stole Ksh72 million from G4S personnel in Nairobi.

The suspects also robbed an ATM machine belonging to the Standard Chartered Bank in Nairobi West.

A 60-year-old granny became the latest suspect to be arrested in regards to the criminal offence.

Mary Kyalo was arrested at her house in Kalumoni village, Machakos, on Monday, where approximately Ksh 2.3 million was recovered.

The latest move came after her grandson, John Kamau Mulei, another suspect in the case, was caught at Muumandu in Machakos and led the detectives to her house.
