Asante Kotoko Coach Defends ‘Flopping’ Abege

The former Nairobi City Stars, Bandari FC, and Sony Sugar forward moved to Kotoko in July from Kariobangi Sharks and the Norwegian tactician has stuck with him despite criticism over his lack of goals.

Zachariassen, however, thinks otherwise. The tactician is happy with how the lanky forward presses opponents’ defense lines forcing them to make mistakes at the back and in the process other forwards in the team benefit. He highlighted the player’s performance against Etoile du Sahel where Kotoko won 2-0 in a Caf Champions League match on Sunday.

“Abege was the one pressing the Etoile defense very high and we base our football on pressing high, he’s absolutely good at doing that, taking him out would’ve allowed Etoile a breather and he had a good game. Most people want to see Abege jumping and heading balls, notwithstanding I’m very happy about his performance both in games and during training sessions,” he said.

Kjetil went on to explain why the striker has struggled to score goals. According to him, the Ugandan is still adjusting to playing with another striker as he was used to playing as a lone striker at his previous clubs.

“He has played as one striker all his life so he needs time to adopt to our play, he has developed so much because from when he came till now, he is a different person just wait and you will see him scoring” he added.
