An employee of the Ministry of Labour in Laikipia County has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives after he reportedly solicited a bribe from a businessman.

Moses Ndung’u, a Senior Labour Inspector, was dramatically picked from his Nanyuki office on Thursday after pocketing a Ksh 15,000 bribe from a local hotelier, in order to issue the trader an inspection certificate for his hotel.

EACC regional manager, Edward Rasugu, told KNA that the suspect recorded a statement at Laikipia East Criminal Investigations office, in Nanyuki, and was released after depositing a Ksh 50,000 surety with police pending his arraignment.

“We have booked the suspect at Nanyuki Police Station to record a statement from him and the complainant as investigations commence,” Rasugu stated on phone.

The EACC regional boss added that the suspect had initially demanded a bribe of Ksh 30,000 but is said to have agreed to lower the figure by half after negotiations.

Rasugu further divulged that once detectives complete investigations, EACC would forward the file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for appropriate directions.

EACC has been on an overdrive to arrest corrupt government and public officers.

The fight against the vice got a major boost in July when High Court Judge Mumbi Ngugi ruled that like other civil servants, governors should step aside once charged for a criminal offence.

She declared a section of the law protecting them unconstitutional.

Kiambu Governor Ferdinard Waititu is the latest governor to be charged with corruption involving irregular county tender allocation.
