Nandi Hills MP, Alfred Keter, has revealed details of his meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta over the looming Mau evictions.

Speaking on Wednesday morning when he was hosted at Kass FM, a local vernacular station, Keter stated that he met President Uhuru in Mombasa where he pleaded with him to intervene on Mau evictions.

“I recently went all the way to Mombasa to meet President Uhuru over Mau evictions. In fact, I am one of the leaders who intervened to ensure that the situation is contained and closed schools re-opened,” indicated Keter.

The MP observed that President Uhuru’s wish was to preserve the forest at the same time ensuring that all evictions are done in a humane manner.

The once vocal legislator, who has since fallen out with the region’s kingpin, Dr William Ruto, also commended former Bomet Governor, Isaac Ruto, for his engagement with ODM boss, Raila Odinga, over the thorny issue.

He also commended on other leaders let by Emurua Dikirr lawmaker, Johanna Ng’eno, who led demonstrations to ensure that the rights of Mau people are observed.

Interestingly, Keter deliberately missed the efforts of Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, who was part of the team agitating for the rights of Mau evictees.

Instead, Keter blamed some individuals inside the government whom he termed as “good for nothing leaders”.

“I am just a mear Nandi Hills MP and I don’t have many powers as compared to the Deputy President. Despite this, I have always tried to do my part,” recounted Keter.

While acknowledging Mau’s importance, Keter observed that the best way to conserve the forest was for leaders from both the Maasai and Kalenjin community to talk and agree on a common solution without necessarily subjecting locals to sufferings.

Asked on his 2022 plans, Keter revealed that he was not in a hurry to announce his plans, but was rather busy serving his constituents and implementing different development projects in Nandi Hills.

“I am not interested in 2022 politics as of now. My focus is on the projects I have initiated in my constituency and my challenge to leaders is not to fight each other, but to focus on development and stop early campaigns,” he noted.
